See how the Luminaire Innov-îs XP1 and the ScanNCut DX Innov-îs Edition SDX225 come together to create a wonderful birthday cake pillow appliqué!

Supplies:

Step 1. On the Luminaire XP1, select Appliqué Embroidery Design (Category 11, Design 014). Insert USB stick into upper USB port, press Set, press Memory, press USB.

Step 2. Remove USB from Luminaire, insert USB into ScanNCut DX and retrieve data. Select USB and press B pocket. Select the embroidery design. Touch Appliqué Icon. Select Part A (the cake plate), press OK, and press Set. Press Add, select Part B (the frosting), touch Ok and press Set.

Step 3. Iron adhesive backing onto your appliqué fabrics and then arrange on a mat. Load mat and press Scan. Next, add Fabric Blade (if you haven’t already). On the screen, arrange cut files on fabric, press Ok, and select Cut.

Step 4. Weed the cut pieces and then take your cut pieces to the Luminaire and hoop your fabric (our pillow case has a zipper). Press Embroidery and embroider the appliqué placement stitches. For the birthday cake, it is the first 2 embroidery segments. Remove the paper backing from the appliqué cut pieces, place inside the placement stitches and press into place with a hot iron. Continue the embroidery, following the steps on the embroidery machine. When you are finished, embellish with ribbon and enjoy the pillow cover at all your birthdays celebrations.

    • Hi Lin,

      Thanks for reaching out!

This is design is from the Luminaire (Step 1. On the Luminaire XP1, select Appliqué Embroidery Design (Category 11, Design 014). Insert USB stick into upper USB port, press Set, press Memory, press USB.) but you could also use a design of your choice or visit iBroidery for more ideas (https://www.ibroidery.com/sitesearch.aspx?SC=Cake).

      Hope this helps!

  • I own a scan n cut but have a Pfaff icon. Is there a way to do this project with what I have. Would love to hear from you.

    • Hi Lynne,

      Thanks for reaching out!

In regards to your question, the cake design is built into the Brother Luminaire machine, but, we have other ‘cake’ options on our iBroidery site for you to peruse if you would like (https://www.ibroidery.com/sitesearch.aspx?SC=cake). Another thing to consider is that the ScanNCut will only read a PES file.

      Hope this helps!

    • Hi Joan,

      Thanks for reaching out!

In regards to your question, an additional layer of medium weight tear away stabilizer would have prevented the puckering.

      Hope this helps!

  • Love to be able to do this since I have both machines. Could you make it possible to print the instructions? I like to have references that I can check off as I go along. Thanks.
