Pay It Forward Mini Quilt

I was inspired by a tiny little stack of seven fabrics a quilty friend gave me a few weeks ago from her stash just because they reminded her of me. That is pretty sweet. Quilty friends are awesome. I thought I would showcase them with some simple white fabric and make a mini for another quilty friend who will be on bed rest for a few months, thinking it might brighten her space. So I decided to call this mini “Pay It Forward”. Let’s get on with it.

Finished Size: 21″ x 21″

  • Sewing Machine: DreamCreator™ VQ2400
  • Quilting Frame: THE Dream Fabric Frame
  • (7) of your favorite fabrics cut into 3.5” squares
  • ¾ yard of white background fabric
  • Binding fabric
  • Batting
  • Fabric for your Mini Quilt Back
  • Basic Sewing Notions (Scissors, Pins, Thread etc.)

Step One

Cutting your background fabric & fabric lay out.

Each row has a 3.5” x 3.5” colored square. Cut 7 of them, each a different color.

Rows 1 & 7

(2) 3.5” x 18.5″ white strips

Row 1: 3.5” colored square / white strip 18.5”
Row 7: 18.5” white strip / 3.5” colored square

Row 2 & 6

(2) 3.5” x 3.5” white strips
(2) 3.5” x 15” white strips

Row 2: 3.5” white square / 3.5” colored square / 15” white strip
Row 6: 15” white strip / 3.5” colored square / 3.5” white square

Row 3 & 5

(2) 3.5” x 6.5″ white strips
(2) 3.5″ x 12” white strips

Row 3: 6.5” white strip / 3.5” colored square / 12” white strip
Row 6: 12” strip white / 3.5” colored square / 6.5” white strip

Row 4

(2) 3.5” x 9 ¼” white strips

Row 4: 9 ¼” strip / 3.5” colored square / 9 ¼” strip

Once you have your mini laid out sew together with a ¼” seam allowance. Press your seam allowances toward the colored squares not the light color background.

Sew all the rows together. I like to square up my mini at this point.

Layer top / batting / quilt back and load it onto THE Dream Fabric Frame

Quilt as desired. I used a variegated grey thread and decided on some simple loops. If you are new to free motion quilting on the frame this is a perfect choice. Loops mimic your handwriting. It’s also easy to get into a rhythm with making loops.

step 4

Once finished quilting, remove the quilt from the THE Dream Fabric Frame and square the quilt up.

step 5

Choose your favorite method of applying your binding and enjoy your mini.
