How to add a pocket insert for filters for homemade cloth masks. You can find the original ‘At Your Side: Cloth Mask Tutorial’ here.
Supplies listed above plus dimensions.
For the back pieces, press over top 1/4″ then another 1/4″ and top stitch down. Baste stitch your preferred straps in the corners of exterior.
Place one of the back pieces right sides together with the exterior and sew (1/4″ seam allowance).
Add the other side which should overlap the other back piece about 1″ or so total. Stitch that side down.
Clip corners and flip right side out through the insert/pocket. Top stitch if you’d like the bottom and top edges.
From the back, fold the center pleat first making sure the insert seam is flat. My pleats are usually 1/4″ or so but you can make sure they’re visually even before stitching. Stitch the center pleats first.
Add the other folds, clip, and top stitch sides down (1/4″ seam allowance).
Wow, there ya go. Very simple to add once you get the hang of it. Use your preferred filter material to place inside the pocket.
Again, it is important to note that cloth face masks have not been proven to provide effective protection against the spread of viruses. For more information, visit the CDC website. Thank you.
Why do you cut two front pieces? I’ve made several other variations and this doesn’t quite make sense to me.
whoops…that was an error. Cut 1 front piece and 2 back.
Thanks
Additional comment – if you are using ties vs elastic I think you will want to move the ties down so they don’t get caught in the seam allowance – realized that as I was doing it.
Actually a better option for sewing the ties may be after the pleats if you are using ties – can add them after…may want to relook at the instructions
Yep, either way works, you can do what works best for you.
Thanks for the great written instruction!
The live video was a bonus yesterday!!
This pattern makes no sense at all
Hello! I prefer this mask over all the others I have tried sewing (more comfortable). Do you have this in a smaller size for kids (age 6/10?).
Thank you!
The pattern makes perfect sense. Thank you!
où sont passés tous les commentaire ? ils peuvent être utiles !
I made two of these and see why people said it didn’t make sense. The back pieces don’t overlap much with the suggested width. I made mine a little bigger. Also, your pleating instructions are a little confusing. More pictures would have helped. I added wire by the nose and they fit well.
I find adding a filter with all those pleats very difficult…
I have to say people sure do complain a lot about a FREE pattern and instructions!!
Great pattern, demonstration, and instructions.. Thanks, very easy to follow!!
What do you use for a filter?
You can use coffee filters
